A series of contributions dedicated to the in-depth study and discovery of new historical and literary materials. Unpublished works and rarities from the bibliographic world and from private manuscript collections.
Renato Saggiori (Padua, 1939), holder of a doctorate in Political Science with a historical focus, graduated with a thesis on a Risorgimento subject. In a sense a child of the trade, from adolescence he was initiated into the secrets of the study of handwritten documents by his father, Giovanni Saggiori (1892-1984), a bibliophile and collector of rare works and autographs. At the age of 18 he created his first bookshop specialising in autographs and in 1958, in Padua, published his first printed catalogue on the subject. In just a few years his knowledge and experience grew enormously, making him a world-renowned expert. After working in Italy and France, in 1981 he moved to Geneva, where he still lives and where, together with his wife Rosine, his invaluable collaborator, he founded the bookshop L'Autographe S.A., which remained active under his direction as an international expert until his retirement in 2005. A renowned palaeographer, Renato Saggiori has contributed articles to numerous newspapers, journals and specialised publications, advised museums, libraries and auction houses, given lectures in various European countries and compiled hundreds of catalogues. He was among the first to denounce as forgeries the alleged diaries of Hitler and, subsequently, those attributed to Mussolini, as well as – more recently – the forged manuscript of the famous poem The Infinity by Giacomo Leopardi. He is responsible for the discovery of previously unknown autographs, wrongly attributed or considered lost, including a manuscript by Emmanuel Kant, a letter written by seventeen-year-old Charles Dickens to his first love, Mary Beadnell, two long fragments of Paganini’s Fifth Violin Concerto, manuscripts by Chopin, Einstein, Goethe, Modigliani, Wagner, Sade, etc. He is the author of a monograph dedicated to papal autographs from the 16th to the 20th century, published in 2006 (Les Papes, cinq siècles de signatures). Renato Saggiori is also known worldwide for his tireless fight against forgeries, which unfortunately remain numerous on the market and in public and private collections.

Sade Unknown

FROM PASSION TO PRISON
by Renato and Rosine Saggiori

Everything has been written about the Marquis de Sade. It would therefore be pointless to publish yet another book on the subject. But what to do when an unpublished correspondence of more than 120 items is discovered, telling a story somewhat different from the one known until now? And if, while studying these documents, others are found, preserved in public archives and which should therefore already have been very well known, but which have been completely ignored? And if, finally, it turns out that the much-discussed Chanoinesse was in fact never a canoness at all? The decision is made that these are discoveries worthy of publication. The Marquis will never cease to surprise us! Particular attention should be paid to the Travel Diary in Italy, between Venice and Genoa, undertaken by the Marquis de Sade and which Renato Saggiori has reconstructed stage by stage with a very rich apparatus of historical documents and manuscripts hitherto completely unpublished. The volume is completed by over a hundred exclusive colour images of documents and manuscripts, as well as of all the routes and places visited by Sade during his travels in France and Italy. An unprecedented bio-bibliographical contribution that completely rewrites the history and events of Sade in the light of discoveries destined to leave their mark.
